How to Hide and Show Labels in Gmail?

Gmail labels provide an easier way to organize your emails. This way you can also separate your important emails from unimportant ones. Overall, these labels can help you in managing your emails in the way you like. Sometimes, you might want to hide a label that you do not use. Or, the label you want to use is already hidden and you want to make them visible. Fortunately, Gmail provides some extremely easy ways in which you can show and hide the labels as per your needs.

Steps to show hidden labels in Gmail

There are three main ways of making the hidden labels visible in Gmail:

Method 1:

Simple drag and drop method

  • In the menu bar present on the left hand side, click on ‘More’ option.
  • The menu will expand, turning into ‘Less’ option, showing a list of hidden labels.
  • Drag the label you want to show above the ‘Less’.
  • The label will become visible.
  • Repeat the steps for all the labels you want to show.

Method 2:

Through Gmail settings

  • Click on the gear-shaped icon on the top-right corner in your Gmail.
  • Tap on ‘settings’ from the drop-down menu that appears.
  • Now, go to the ‘labels’ tab from the horizontal menu list on the top of the page.
  • A list of all the available labels will appear.
  • Click on the ‘show’ button for the label(s) you want to show in your Gmail.

Method 3:

Through Manage labels

  • Click on the ‘More’ option on the left side menu in Gmail.
  • Next, click on the ‘manage labels’ button.
  • List of all the labels will appear.
  • Tap on ‘show’ to make the labels visible.

How to hide unwanted Gmail labels?

Follow the steps given below for hiding Gmail labels:

Method 1:

Simple drag and drop method

  • Select the ‘More’ option on the left side in your Gmail.
  • The menu will expand and turn into ‘Less’.
  • Now, drag the label you want to hide and place it below the ‘Less’ button.
  • Repeat the steps for all the labels you want to hide.

Method 2:

Through Gmail settings

  • Tap on the gear-shaped icon on the top-right corner and select ‘settings’ from the drop-down menu.
  • Now, go to the ‘labels’ option present in the top horizontal menu.
  • You can now see the list of all available Gmail labels.
  • Click on the ‘hide’ button next to the specific label or labels you want to hide.

Method 3:

Through Manage labels

  • Select the ‘More’ button on the left side of your Gmail.
  • Tap on ‘Manage label’ option from the drop-down list.
  • List of all the labels will appear on the screen.
  • Click on the ‘hide’ button present parallel to the label you wish to hide.

Important

  • You can hide any label in your Gmail except Inbox.
  • You can also add categories tab to your shown label list by following the same process as explained above.
  • It is also possible to show the labels only if they contain unread emails. Just click on the setting button (three vertical dots) present right next to your label and click on ‘show if unread’ option. However, this is only possible for the custom made labels and not the default ones.
  • Showing or hiding does not affect the messages of that label.
